SSI is pleased to announce that the company has been awarded Approval-in-Principle (AiP) by the Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) for its innovative green tug design, E-VOLT Tugs, during Green Maritime Day (28 October 2025) held as part of India Maritime Week 2025.

The certificate was presented in the esteemed presence of Mr. Susanta Kumar Purohit, Chairman, V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority, and conferred by Mr. P.K. Mishra, Managing Director, IRS.

The E-VOLT Tug design fully complies with the Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP) specifications set for Indian port operations. It incorporates an advanced Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) configuration and an efficient, ergonomic layout to optimise performance, safety, and sustainability.

This AiP milestone follows the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between SSI and IRS on 17 October 2024, which initiated the formal design approval process. The concept design was developed based on SeaTech’s established expertise in electric vessel technology and in alignment with IRS classification requirements.

SSI extends its sincere appreciation to Team IRS for their professionalism, dedication, and timely guidance — key factors contributing to the successful completion of the design and review process.

This Approval-in-Principle establishes a robust and ready-to-adopt design solution for electric tugs operating in Indian ports, supporting both government and private port operators in their transition towards cleaner, more efficient maritime operations.
